The real-life experience
It is important for students to have the real-life experience. Students will have the chance to practice and use English. Some students would ask why they needed to learn English. Some might have doubts about their English skills. What they need is the real experience!
This is a real-life experience – write a letter to a person who lives overseas. We can hear the students’ real ‘voice’ in their letters. Our primary students mentioned their appearance, favourite food, best friend, and school. Some talked about their country. Our teenaged students are patriotic. They expressed their thoughts on the issue of Diaoyutai Islands . Also, their closings are honest regards to the person.
Let’s read some of the examples as follows:
Their appearance:
~ I am thin. – Willy
~ I am very handsome and very tall. – Andy
Their favourite food:
~ My favourite food is spaghetti. – Ben
~ I don’t like milk, but I like milk tea. – Betty
Their best friend:
~ My best friend is Johnny. He is playful. – Willy
Their school:
~ My favourite class is math. – Kenny
~ My favourite class is science because I think science is fun. - Jason
Their country:
~ I like Taiwan because Taiwan has many nice places and good food. – Ker
Their patriotic thought:
~ Japanese should not attack our fishermen, although Japan is a good country. – George.
Their closing:
~ I wish your baby is healthy. – Willy
~ I wish you can visit Taiwan . – Ker
~ I wish you can be a good mom. – Stacy
~ I wish your baby and your family have good health. – Andy
Our students gain the experience of using English in a real context throughout this writing activity. They also have the opportunity to use what they have learnt.
