2.The Verses

Reinterpreting Ba Duan Jing From the Theories of the Eight Extra Meridians

The Verses

 

In the following section, we will make a comparison on the nine collected verses. From the verses, we can see the development of Ba Duan Jin, but the forms of the exercises are not comprehensively stated. Nonetheless, the expected effects are indicated in most verses.

仰掌上舉以治三焦者也

 

Lifting arms and turning Palms to the sky, Sanjiao enter into the mind

 

昂首仰托順三焦

 

Holding head and lifting palms to the sky, Sanjiao enter into the mind

 

仰托一度理三焦

 

Holding and Lifting upward puts Sanjiao in order

 

兩手托天理三焦

 

Two hands holding up to the sky, Sanjiao enter into the mind

 

手把碧天擎

 

Hands stretching up to the sky

 

Form Two

 

左肝右肺如射雕焉

 

Left for liver, right for lungs, fully strung to shoot an owl.

 

左肝右肺如射雕

 

Left for liver, right for lungs, fully strung to shoot an owl.

 

左肝右肺如射雕

 

Left for liver, right for lungs, fully strung to shoot an owl.

 

左右開弓似射雕

 

Pulling left and pulling right, open bows aim far behind

 

雕弓左右鳴

 

Fully strung bows rings left and right

 

Form Three

 

東西獨托所以安其脾胃矣

 

Single hand up east and west, gallbladder and stomach in check

 

東脾單托兼西胃

 

East lifting for the gallbladder; west holding up for the stomach

 

東肝單托西通腎()

 

East lifting for gallbladder passing all the way to the west for the stomach

 

調理脾胃須單舉

 

Lifting high with Single hand, keeping gallbladder and stomach in the hand

 

鼎憑單臂舉

 

Lifting single-handed like a wine glass

 

Form Four

 

返複而顧所以理其傷勞矣

 

Looking back and looking forward, internal injuries disappear.

 

五勞回顧七傷調

 

Looking back and looking forward, internal injuries disappear.

 

五勞回顧七傷調

 

Looking back and looking forward, internal injuries disappear.

 

五勞七傷往後瞧

 

Looking back to the heels internal injury clears

 

劍向半肩橫

 

Sword sweeps across the shoulders

 

Form Five

 

大小朝天所以通其五藏矣

 

Pointing to the sky head and tail, all five organs are cared.

 

鱔魚擺尾通心氣

 

Sweep the tail like an eel, smooth air goes into the heart.

 

遊魚擺尾通心臟

 

Sweep the tail like a fish, the way to the heart goes afresh.

 

搖頭擺尾去心火

 

Shaking head and moving tail rids the internal fire

 

擒縱如猿捷

 

Moving swift like an ape

 

Form Six

 

咽津補氣,左右挑其手

 

Swallow saliva for Qi flow, flicking hands left and right

 

兩手搬腳定於腰

 

Rotate waist, bend for the feet

 

手攀雙足理於腰

 

Bending for the feet, ailments at the waist go away

 

背後七顛百病消

 

Clicking heels seven times a day keeps all diseases away

 

威嚴似虎獰

 

Fierce like a roaring tiger
