Local university graduate captures red dot award
Source: United Daily News
Tatung University Department of Industrial Design graduate Wu Yu-
ying continued Taiwan’s tradition of design excellence, winning a
red dot design award for her “breathing” chair.
According to Wu, inspiration for the chair came from images of
plants cells. “As with the structure of a plant cell, the chair’s
multi-sized ventilation holes allow it to breathe as a user changes
sitting positions.”
She added that her painful knees also played a part in the chair’s
creation. “I wanted to create a chair that helped absorb the
pressure that builds up on a user’s knee joints.”
Fashioned out of high-density foam, the chair resembles a white
block of tofu and features three layers of environmental-friendly
material. Wu claims that its innovative design allows the chair to
adjust to the user’s weight and posture.

“When one sits down, the chair partially gives in the center and the
two sides become armrests,” she said. “The chair’s elasticity also
provides support as one stands up.”
Wu’s creation beat out more than 4,800 entries from over 60
countries to take the furniture design concept award. Her chair was
also recognized at this year’s Young Designers Exhibition in Taipei.
Wu will receive her red dot award in Singapore next month, and the
chair will go on display at the city-state’s red dot museum for one
year. The designer said her future plans include studying art design
in Sweden and delving into the world of kitchenware creations.
According to organizers, the red dot award is the world’s largest
design award in terms of submissions. (PCT-JSM)

Foam Block Turns Into A Chair When You Sit On It
Posted by John Farrier in Arts & Crafts on October 26, 2009 at 3:10

Yu-Ying Wu, a graduate student in industrial design at a Taiwanese
university, created a foam block that turns into a chair when
compressed. The holes in the block aren’t random — they’re carefully
shaped and selected to fold into a specific pattern when the user
sits on the chair:
Wu added that her other inspiration for a chair with holes came from
plant cells. The appearance of the holes makes people believe that
the chair can breathe. Moreover, for the movement of either sitting
down, being seated or standing up, the chair can transform in
accordance with sitting posture, acting as if it were breathing.
I’ve never been all that enthusiastic about eating tofu. But sitting
on a gigantic piece of the stuff sounds just delicious.
No, Yu-Ying Wu’s “breathing chair” is not really a giant chunk of
tasteless protein, but it will automatically form to your body as
you sit, turning from tofu to armchair with the weight of your body.
But beyond intriguing design, the chair is build from a springy
plastic compound with enough resistance that it will actually help
lift you out of the chair when standing, relieving some pressure
from your knees.

的單人座椅。當使用者坐下時,只需把力量交給椅子,讓椅子代替膝蓋施力來緩衝坐下;
