10 Things to be Grateful for

People seldom realize how lucky they are.

For sure, in our lives, there are so many things that we can complain about.

“I’m so busy but it pays so little.”

“The traffic sucks.”

“It’s work, there’s nothing fun about it.”

These are the grumbles that I often hear from people at my age. I’m no saint, thus, I do complain as well. Nonetheless, I recently realized how little we give credits to the tiniest things in our life.

We take so many things for granted.

“Don’t need to fuss about that, that’s the way it is!”

On my ride to Hsin-chu City, where my boyfriend works, I looked out the bus window and saw, in the rain, there it stands, a highway construction site. The piers are finished and there are steel stuffs (no idea what those are called) covering up the upper part of the pier and are ready to stretch out to build the roadway. Right at that moment, I realized how strenuous I could have been to finish constructing bridges, paving roads, building cars, etc.
Very random thoughts swept over my head. At the same time, I realized how human is so formidable (though not almighty).

I listen and hear people (even myself) complaining about their lives when, actually, there are so many things to be grateful for.

Thus, I started this routine with my boyfriend every night, to each talk about 10 things that happened to us that were wonderful, lovely, precious, beautiful, etc. And most of all, what made our day and made us happy, smile, laugh, etc. Ten! Ten of them. My boyfriend ‘complained’ at first that it was way too hard. I encouraged him to think through the whole day - What happened? Who you met? Where did you go? What did you see? How did you feel? …We’re up for such a long time a day (at least 12 hours), how is it possible that there are not even 10 things to be grateful for? Even if you stayed in bed all day long, one can still be grateful about being able to do so and thank the fluffiness of one’s pillow.

It’s not hard at all.

It’s not mission impossible.

And yet, we DO take so many little things for granted.

Last night, my boyfriend and I talk through the phone for a short time and was deciding to hang up. I remembered this. We alternate turns. It was a piece of cake for me since I often found joy in the simplest things. I have more than ten to talk about for a day. Thus, limiting it to ten meant that I would need to pick and choose the most interesting things to talk about. As for my boyfriend, he took some time to come up with all ten. Nevertheless, I got the opportunity to learn about his day in more details. He told me the things that he might have overlooked if we were merely chatting our time away. From each instance that he shared, I asked more questions about “why” he felt and thought that way.

Through the process, we shared our lives, feelings, and thoughts. Moreover, we grew and learned to look at the bright and positive side of our lives.

Life is difficult. And yet, there are so many more beautiful things in life than most of us think. The first time we did this, I told him, on my tenth item, that I was truly grateful for his willingness to do this with me and I cherish this kind of interaction a lot.
