please support TAIWAN
I know not much, or even none, of my foreign friends read this blog of mine here (since I mostly type in Chinese). But for once, please read through this article and 'read' me out.
[This article is dedicated to one of the Taiwanese taekwondo contestants who was suspended from the competition in Asian Games]
Some History Background
Taiwan is a small island country in Asia. After the Communist Party took over China, a group of KMT Party (Nationalists) members, mostly soldiers, fled to Taiwan, in the hope of taking back China (the land) someday. However, KMT Party settled and, along with other people in Taiwan, started to develope a new government. Logically and historically, (I skipped through even earlier history of Taiwan, in case you get bored by me; if you will, please go online and google and read more) Taiwan was never a land or a part of the Communist Party (now governing China). Thus, Taiwan was never a part of China - we claim our independence in light of the fact that not much people know about this history and Taiwan.
Oppression by China Government
Though we would love to look at the things happening/happened around/to Taiwan with a non-politically-interfered/filtered lenses, it is hard for us since whenever China can, their government would overtly/covertly step in to oppress/ban Taiwan from international events. One of the most obvious thing that one can observe is the fact that Taiwan can not use our own name, "Taiwan", as our title in various international affairs, eg. the use of "Chinese Taipei", which delegitimizes the country status of Taiwan.
Questions Surrounding the Suspension
The contestant in the taekwondo contest was suspended from the competition in Asian Games abruptly in the middle of the game:
(This is a current event that has just happened a few days ago. I did some research online on the news and here are some of the questions facing the suspension)
Asian Games committee's (specifically by the Asian Taekwondo Union) reasoning of the suspension was that this contestant's socks(the special kind of socks that they wear on the competition) violated what was allowed to go on the game. However,
1) If this sort of socks is banned from the competition, why did she, the contestant, is able to compete till this point (in the middle of the competition) and was not notified until then?
2) The socks were approved by the committee prior of the competition, why saying no now?
(please let me know if I got anything wrong on this)
This suspension incidence is merely a tiny scope of what is happening to Taiwan's participation of international events.
We are struggling every step of the way on the international stage.
We need your support for Taiwan.
Even if it's by spreading the word, we'll greatly appreciate it.
Please feel free to show this or let other friends and families of yours know more about Taiwan : )
Thank you.
