Thursday Walk in the Sun

Today we took a tricycle ride to another part of the island so as to see more than just the busy main tourist area where we were staying.  The whole island is a tourist area, of course, but some areas are more built up than others. We rode to Diniwid Beach, northwest of where we were staying.  Naturally, there was the usual attempt to cheat us out of money by our driver, but this time Eva wasn’t buying it.  She told him what the correct going rate for the trip should be, paid him that amount and walked away.  There was no one around at Diniwid since it is off the beaten-path.  From Diniwid there is a costal path you can walk that leads back to our hotel area.  This trail covers some beautiful beach and coastline, but it does involve some precarious parts that require using rope handrails and some fancy footwork.  It also involves getting hit by waves!  We had a good time walking back and stopped to take many pictures.

About halfway back we came to a resort, the Boracay Terrace Resort.  It appeared basically empty, but was in a gorgeous location right on the beach.  Its bar/restaurant opens right to the white sand and surf, so we decided to eat lunch at this secluded location.  I had a great hamburger and beer, obviously!

While relaxing here we made a disturbing discovery, Eva did not have her umbrella!  We have matching umbrellas, so you can understand why this was so distressing.  I concluded that Eva had placed it on the ground (closed) when we had stopped for one of our many photos.  She suggested a location where she believed she may have left it.  I speedily set off in search of our prized umbrella leaving Eva at the resort.  When I arrived at said location, the umbrella was nowhere to be seen.  I decided to walk all the way back to our starting point searching as I went.  No one was behind us on the path and no one had passed us, so I was confident I would find it.  Disappointedly, my hopes were dashed – no umbrella anywhere.  After sorrowful contemplation I concluded that Eva must have left it on the rocks where it was washed out to the sea by the strong waves.  On the horror!  What a tragic end to befall our beloved umbrella!  Despairingly, I began to walk back to where I left Eva sometime before.  Shortly I came across her walking toward me.  For a brief second I thought maybe she had discovered the mislaid umbrella, but alas, she had not.  I had taken so long to return that Eva had feared that I had met the same dark fate as her ill-fated umbrella – washed out to sea!  She was happy to see me alive (I think).   This heartrending loss resurrected the devastating loss of my much-loved blue Nike hat only 11 days before.  I walked back to the hotel dejectedly.

Eva knew there was one way to rejuvenate my spirits (no, not beer), she suggested we go for a massage!  I willingly complied with this proposal.  The parlor where we went was on the busy main beach located on the second floor of a two story building.  (This is not Manila or Bangkok, so massage parlors are on the level here.)   The second floor was really more like a covered patio, with light white material covering the ceiling and windows that was blown around by the constant robust off shore breeze.   It was what I can only refer to as a travel-magazine-moment – island décor, breeze, waves crashing, my lovely wife beside me and a one hour massage for under $7.00 US!   (I was able to forget about the umbrella the whole time!)
