[The Malaysian Insider] Dr Porntip says ready to testify via video conference

~ By Neville Spykerman

SHAH ALAM, May 19 — The Selangor government today said that arrangements have been made for Dr Porntip Rojanasunan to testify live from Bangkok during the Teoh Beng Hock inquest.

Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said the forensic pathologist had agreed to testify via live video conferencing.

Lawyers representing the state in the inquest have made an application to the Coroner’s Court to have the video conference at the i-City Events Hall tomorrow.

But the Coroner’s Court has yet to make a ruling on this.

He said they understand the court is waiting for approval from Chief Justice Tan Sri Zaki Tun Azmi.

“We hope the court will allow our application for the video conference as it serves the best interest of all parties,” said Khalid today.

Dr Porntip (picture) had been hired by the state as an expert witness for the inquest into the death of the political aide.

Teoh was found dead last July after being questioned overnight by the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) over graft allegations.

However the Thai civil servant had wanted to pull out midway into the inquest, citing indirect pressure from the Malaysian government.

The move by the state will allow her to continue her testimony because the issue of her safety will no longer be a factor.

Khalid said the state hopes its application will enable the inquest to continue smoothly.
