Practica vs Milonga

After going to Buenos Aires, we have experienced different kinds of practicas and milongas and we have some reflections on our Practica, and why we insist in organizing practica instead of milonga...

Looking at you into your eyes - Las Miradas

It's very interesting to watch people dance Chacarera and Zamba in milongas when there's a break of tango music. These are folk dances of Argentinian. The interesting thing for me is the way they look at their partners during the dance. The Argentinian may not realize, but for us Asian, to look at someone directly into their eyes for 3-4 minutes is quite embarrassing or nearly impossible. For Chacarera is still OK, as it's kind of playful, but for Zamba, it's such a seductive romantic dance using a handkerchief to catch your partner and seduce her/him... and the kind of look is not just looking, it's ... may be what they called "mirada" ... which is something more than just looking, but it's can be penatrating into your heart... they dance with such mirada to partners who are not necessarily their lovers, and what's more amazing is most of the girls dance with a true smile on their faces... it's like a dance with so much flirting publicly... but it seems so natural for them. May be for Argentinian, they are proud to flirt and proud be flirted with... not like in Asia, flirting is quite... underground still... or at least in the dark...

Mario Morales and his studio

Mario Morales... At the beginning, all I know about him is that he is the choreographer of Jose y Melody's dance in the Stage Tango Championship in 2008 and Diego and Chizuko's dance in 2010. I tried to ask local dancers about him, but seems not many people know him, until i asked a Japanese girl, and she actually is teaching at his studio. She told me he has group class on choreography that nite, and asked us to go. We went there nearly 1 hour late, Mario greeted us and told us we can sit aside to watch or join the class if we want. All the students in the class are of very good levels, the choreography in that class was so nice, his choreography has a tension with the music and a kind of emotion in it, not just movements, i love it immediately... so after the class, we arranged with him to do a choreography for us.

Gabriel Misse

Gabriel Misse has been one of the favourite dancers of Raymond for quite a long while. After years, we finally met him in the Sydney Tango Festival, and took 2 classes from him, from which there are quite some new input to our dancing. We think there must be a lot more to learn from him, so this time, we tried to spend more time taking private classes with him.

My Milonga experiences

This time, it's the 3rd trip to Buenos Aires for me, I felt quite different in milongas with the experience from last time, a bit strange, cos i felt there were less local people dancing in the milongas, more tourists, and more professionals who came to pick up students and chances to teach abroad... less local people came to milonga for purely enjoyment... People told me may be milongas became more expensive these years, 3 years ago the entrance fee is 15 pesos, now, most of them are 25 pesos ... so less local people can afford going to milongas every nite, and some even told me less people dance tango in Buenos Aires. I was quite surprised as recent years, tango was spreading to other parts of the world fiercely but actually in it's hometown, tango is not that heated... they said less local people take classes, Tango Brujo was closed down, DNI has fewer students and moved to another place, we don't know if it's a downtrend of nuevo tango or there're other reasons... but if milongas in summer time even have less locals than 3 years before when i came in winter time which is not a peak season, this surprised me.

Ladies Technique Classes

During the 1st week while Raymond is not there yet, i tried to take as many ladies technique classes as possible, trying to get new input to my own teaching. I joined them disregard of the levels cos it's not just for my own training, but to learn how to teach too...

My dream ... my reality ...

It's time to conclude my exploration with my dream since next week, i'll be back to reality starting work again in a new company ... It's been more than half a year that i've not been working, i'm surprised i've done something like this myself ... to quit my job and go for something unsure ... i really don't know what i'll get in the beginning, just that i knew i would regret if i didn't do it ...

World Tango Championship in Busan Trex Game 2008

We have decided to join the World Stage Tango competition in Korea, just hoping to force ourselves to move forward and to practice more, wishing to try our best to see how much we could do in stage tango ... and we did enjoy the process, and learnt a lot, together with the friendship we earned with participants from other countries ... all these are precious experience for us.
