The East Rift Valley was formed in 70,000,000 years ago. It is situated between the Central Mountain Range and the coastal mountains on the east. The national scenic area stretches from Mugua River to Beinai River, cross through the “Green Corridor” from Hualien to Taitung. Till now, the complicated plate movement is still going on and thus diverse terrain features come to exist.
In the Valley, the natural scenery is beautiful, the inhabitants are gracious and the environment is pure and unpolluted. With an unique natural and cultural scenery, the Valley is abundant in the tourists recreation resources. Along the country road, pastoral outlook is enchanting. The chains of scenic mountains, along with fertile plains with paddy fields, ranches, day lilies, pomelos, melon fields and tea plantations create an impressive sight and attract to every visitor. Therefore, the East Rift Valley has always been called a “land of oozing milk and honey.”

Liyu Lake is the rift valley's famous scenic area of the north. The surrounding mountains, the spread-out lake waters, the beauty of the picturesque scenery, all make this area into a scenic spot that should not be missed.
Car-driving only allows one to have a superficial experience of tasting the phytoncide found between the exquisitely beautiful lake and mountains. It is only through cycling around the lake that one can fully enjoy this experience. The 5-kilometer long bicycle path circles the lake, passing exquisite forests and green, verdant, beautiful mountain scenery on one side, and beautiful, crystal-clear water waves reflecting green on the other side. There is beautiful scenery throughout the route, and there are many places where one can stop to enjoy the scenery. Along the path are resting pavilions, picnic tables, and bicycle parking facilities, all inviting you to take a rest and interact with the lake waters. It is recommended that during the bicycle ride, you stop to take a walk along the forest footpaths, and enjoy the healthiest of phytoncide spas as you listen to the bird sounds. During your ride, if you are not feeling tired, you can play in the mini water park by the side of the lake, or take a boat ride to get close to the waters. Of course, while visiting Liyu Lake, do not miss out on visiting the wooden, two-storey viewing pavilions. After climbing up the wooden steps, you can view the lake scenery and the green, lush mountain scenery, taking in both the mountains and water. At dusk, thick clouds and mists can been seen surrounding the mountains in the distance. In the foreground, newly-lit, colorfully decorated lanterns reflect upon the lake waters. A gentle, refreshing breeze blows upon this natural splash-ink painting and upon the families as they picnic together on the viewing pavilion, experiencing the joys of living.
