ACAMIS 2011.

The moment the plane touched down, it hit me - my basketball days are over. I'm not defined by basketball nor obsessed with it but it has undeniably contributed to the highlights of my high school life. In sweaty jerseys and corroded sneakers, through bruised knees and chipped fingernails, I have come to meet, know, and love my ladies <3 The ACAMIS tournament of 2011 wrapped up the season perfectly.

Thank you Stephanie, Jasmine, Vicky, Sunny, Sandy, Jessica, Catherine, Cindy, Helena, and Coach Hillebrand.

day1. KH to BJ.
The trip to Beijing began on Friday, Jan 21th. That morning I woke up at 4, freshened up, checked my luggage one last time and headed to the airport. Sandy was the only person there by the time I arrived. We checked in our luggages.
... I have no memory of my flight from KH to HK. At HK Airport we shopped at Zara. Then ran back from Gate 15.
From HK to Beijing, Vicky and I watched SAW on my iPhone. All of a sudden, there was a commotion from ahead. Johnny stood up to see and the flight attendent shrieked at him to sit down. We guessed what was going on ahead of us and one popular theory was that someone's giving birth. After we landed, we were informed that the drama involved an apparently billingual woman who screamed "F-U-C-K-U" at the person next to her for being too loud. Yeah.
Arriving at Beijing, we took the school's bus to the school, CISB. We were shown our rooms and we unpacked. Had dinner at La Pizza.

day2. SOCIAL.
Woke up for happy breakfast at the pool table. The tournament officially begins. We girls left for BCIS for our tournament in the afternoon. We won our first game, against DAIS. Then we went back to CISB. At the Lecture Theatre this boy who kept sneaking peeks at the KAS girls volunteered to take the our team to Solana for dinner. We ate at the Greek restaurant. Johnny was accused for an explosive catastrophe.
No one could find the Badas(?) store, where all the teams were supposed to meet up, so everyone returned to the school on our own.
When we returned, there was a "SOCIAL" in the gym. They strung up lights and played loud music. Half an hour of awkward standing around against the walls, then some of us girls stopped caring and went up to the makeshift dancefloor. Towards the end, a few guys and girls from the other teams finally got up as well. Only then did the party really start. However, it ended soon because curfew was 10.

day3. DUCK PARTY.
In the morning we went to CISB again for the tournament. Cindy had arrived that morning and we played as a team that day. We had games with IAB and ASU, and returned to our dorms that night with two victories. Cindy got injured in our second game and couldn't walk.
We went to Solana and had Teppanyaki dinner. We rejected the optional Movie Night because most of us have watched the movie already.
Angel came over to our dorms and we had a Duck Party. It involved bananas and instant noodles and candies and cookies and, as the name implies, a duck. That night I went to bed with a full stomach.

day4. CHAMPIONSHIP. DINNER. BJ IN BEIJING.
Last day of the tournament. In the morning we went to watch our boy play the Semifinals. After that, we warmed up for our game-- the championship against SCIS. Coach had us gather around for a meeting and gave a serious speech. At first we played poorly; the other team had obviously observed us play before and analyzed our strategies. They saw right through Five Short and our defense seemed to collapse around their team.
At the beginning, we were down by several points. I was tired and flustered at playing against a team so much taller than ours but I still wanted the first place trophy badly. During half time, after putting in our hands and screaming the cheer, I was motivated again, and I think the other girls were too. We began playing much better, and by end of fourth quarter with a little more than 2 seconds left of the clock, we were down by 3 points.
Coach devised a strategy to help us tie the game, but the moment the game resumed the other team called a timeout. The clock showed 1.9 seconds left. I could hardly stay sane from the anxiety.
In the end, we didn't get our shot in time. When the buzzer sounded I walked numbly back to the sidelines. Big, fat tears fell from my eyes, and before I knew it soon everyone was hugging and crying. Our team bawled like there's no tomorrow, while the other team celebrated. They cheered and applauded as I wiped my tears away for the third time.
Finally we lined up to shake our hands. (I just noticed, that game we forgot to thank the referees.)
The host made us 6 seniors from both teams line up in front of the crowd, and they clapped for us.
Then someone said, "On the count of three let's go thank Mr Hillebrand!"
I said, "On the count of three, why don't we hug him?" And so that's what happened, on the count of three, Coach was nearly tackled by 10 tearful, sweaty girls. When he finally opened his mouth I expected him to say something sentimental; instead he went, "Ow, my knee."
After that we had lunch, then we watch the boys' championship. SCIS won.
We walked back to our dorms after that, and dressed in our finest. We waited for the Awards Dinner, and were given our trophies by this really tall man who has a sexy voice and supposedly had something to do with the NBA but I can't remember his name. We were shown an amazing slideshow of the tournament and the All Tournament Player trophies were handed out. I received this huge ass shirt that says "MEN SIZE L" on the tag. I loved every bit of the dinner, from the cheerful atmosphere of all the teams having fun together down to the very last piece of brownie.
After the dinner, reluctantly, we returned to our dorm. Olympic Village was struck by the very same fate that befell Movie Night: rejection. So we girls had a party. It was hilarious and beautiful and I will forever cherish everything that happened in the room that night. <3
Later, the guys returned from Olympic Village on their own. We shut off all the lights and camped out at the corridor next to the creepy, mysterious tunnel that leads to the creepy, mysterious room. Adding to the suspense is the fact that the teachers could return any moment, because on the first day we were threatened that if a boy entered a girl's room (or vice versa), all the boys will be killed personally. We huddled around in a tight little circle and shared scary stories. I was the one who started it because I wanted to hear something new; instead, none of them knew any good ones so Stephanie and I told the ghost stories instead. Right after I told the scariest story I knew, a sound came from the end of the hallway. Somebody whispered an urgent "Kinzer!" And in a split moment we were all scrambling to our feet. I heard a girl shriek as I rushed into the nearest room, door slamming shut behind me.
As I stood there panting heavily, I looked at the 4 other girls in the room. The whole evacuation process had taken two seconds, tops.
"What the hell was that?" I said. Someone said she heard Mr Kinzer's voice. I listened but could only hear silence from the hallway.
All of a sudden, there was a light knocking on the door. We stared at each other, not knowing what to do. "It couldn't be Kinzer," a girl whispered, "They don't check up on us in our rooms". Seconds later, the knocking started again and she said, "Come in."
The door slowly swung open in seconds that felt like an eternity. Needless to say.. we got caught.
Later, as I was about to return to my room, I saw why. In the middle of the  crime scene  hallway were a bottle of water, vampire candies, a pillow, and two unmatching flip flops.
Finally, reluctantly, we called it a night. I packed.

day5. TIANANMEN. HOME.
Walked five not-baby blocks. Cold. Took subway. Cold. Visited Tiananmen. Cold. Returned. Really fuckin' cold.
Took bus to airport. To HK, then to KH, then to HOME at midnight.
