1.custody /ˈkʌs.tə.di/監護權,n [U]

--the legal right or duty to care for someone or something, especially a child after its parents have separated or died

The court granted custody of the child to the mother.


2.whimper
/ˈwɪm.pər/啜泣,v [I]

--(especially of an animal) to make a series of small, weak sounds, expressing pain or unhappiness

A half-starved dog lay in the corner, whimpering pathetically.


3.blizzard
/ˈblɪz.əd/,n

  --[C] a severe snow storm with strong winds

We once got stuck in a blizzard for six hours.


4.novice
/ˈnɑː.vɪs/生手,n [C]

--a person who is not experienced in a job or situation

I've never driven a car before - I'm a complete novice.


5.ozone
/ˈəʊ.zəʊn/臭氧,n [U]

--a poisonous form of oxygen

 informal> air that is clean and pleasant to breathe, especially near the sea

   Scientist are working on ways to amend the hole in the ozone layer.


6.evergreen
/ˈev.ə.griːn/,adj

--describes a plant, bush, or tree which has leaves for the whole year

 The group’s name matches the evergreen quality of their songs.


7.torrent
/ˈtɒr.ənt/湍流,n

--[C] a large amount of water that is moving quickly

 Heavy rainfall turned the river into a rushing torrent.


8.format
/ˈfɔː.mæt/,n [C or U]

--a pattern, plan or arrangement

The meeting will have the usual format - introductory session, group work and then a time for reporting back.


9.gorgeous
/ˈgɔː.dʒəs/,adj

    --very beautiful or pleasant

    The bride looked gorgeous.


10.gravity
/ˈgræv.ɪ.ti/ [U]

--the force which attracts objects towards one another, especially the force that makes things fall to the ground

    Newton discovered the laws of gravity.

-- [C or U] slightly old-fashioned something that is wrong with your mind or body permanently

In cases of severe mental handicap, constant supervision is recommended.


12.heir

--[C] a person who will legally receive money, property or a title from another person, especially an older member of the same family, when that other person dies

Despite having a large family, they still had no son and heir.


13.hijack
/ˈhaɪ.dʒæk/,v [T]

--to take control of an aircraft or other vehicle during a journey, especially using violence

Two men hijacked a jet travelling to Paris and demanded $125 000.


14.carnation
/kɑːˈneɪ.ʃən/,n [C]

--(a plant with) a small flower with a sweet smell, which is usually white, pink, or red

Carnation are given to mothers, as they symbolize sweetness and endurance.
