1.substitute /ˈsʌb·stɪˌtut/ v [I/T]

--to use someone or something instead of another person or thing:

[T] You can substitute oil for butter in this recipe.


2.caretaker
/ˈkeərˌteɪ·kər/ n [C]  

--a person employed to take care of a large building or property, doing cleaning, repairs, gardening, or other jobs

The building’s caretaker reported the fire.


3.interference
/ˌɪn·tərˈfɪər·əns/ n [U]

--On the radio, television, or telephone, interference is noise, lines, etc., that prevent a clear sound or picture from being received.

She seems to regard any advice from me as interference.


4.chubby
/ˈtʃʌb·i/ adj

--(esp. of children) rounded in a pleasant and attractive way:

The perfect baby has, we are told, chubby little fingers and toes, chubby legs, and chubby cheeks.


5.compel

--to force someone to do something:

At school, we were compelled to wear uniforms, which I hated.


6.clasp

--to hold someone or something firmly in your hands or arms

He clasped the vase, afraid he would drop it.


7.freight

--goods that are transported from one place to another by ship, aircraft, train, or truck

Most planes carry both freight and passengers.


8.conserve
/kənˈsɜrv/ v [T]

--to keep and protect from waste, loss, or damage; preserve:

In order to conserve fuel, they put in extra insulation.


9.affection
/əˈfek·ʃən/ n [C/U]

--a feeling of liking someone or something:

[U] Pets should be treated with affection.


10.dusk
/dʌsk/ n [U]

--the time just before night when the day is losing its light but it is not yet dark


11.folklore
/ˈfoʊkˌlɔr/, n [U]

--the traditional stories, beliefs, and customs of a group of people


12.summon
傳喚,召喚
/ˈsʌm·ən/ v [T]

--to order someone come to a particular place, or to officially tell someone to be present:

The president summoned an emergency meeting of his advisers.


13.lame
跛的/leɪm/ adj

--not able to walk correctly because of physical injury or weakness of the legs or feet
