Greenhouse Effect - Joanna

Introduction:

Thesis statement/position/stance/opinion/perspective:

In fact, without this natural phenomenon there would be no life on Earth and without greenhouse heating, the oceans would freeze over.

Body paragraph:

Topic sentence (main idea):

Greenhouse effect is caused by an excess of greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide being the main culpritis topic sentence, and carbon dioxide are the key words.

Supporting sentences:

Cause & Effect - As a result of man-made activities, it is estimated that global average temperature could increase by as much as 5 degree Celsius by the middle of the 21st century.

Concluding sentence: No.

Body paragraph:

Topic sentence (main idea):

“Some scientists disagree with such drastic predictions and propose that it is the rising global temperatures that are naturally increasing the levels of carbon dioxide.” is the topic sentence, and the rising global temperatures are the key words.

Supporting sentences:

Cause & Effect - global warming is a direct result of the Earth’s natural cycle of warming and cooling, a natural rhythm.

Process Analysis- Some scientists …and propose that… This proposes that …They also proposed that…

Concluding sentence: No.

Conclusion:

Restatement of thesis statement/position/stance/opinion/perspective:

No conclusion.

“It might be possible that global warming is a combination of the Earth’s natural climate rhythm and man’s activities.” is the main idea.

PCQS:

Prediction:

In second paragraph, we can predict that greenhouse effect results from man-made activities, and the Industrial Revolution was the threshold of increased atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide.

Clarification:

In third paragraph, some scientists disagree with those predictions. They propose that it is the rising global temperatures that are naturally increasing the levels of carbon dioxide. They also proposed that the man-made production of carbon dioxide is just a small percentage of the naturally occurring carbon dioxide and much greater amount enters and leaves the atmosphere as part of the natural cycle of water exchange from, and back into, the sea and vegetation.

Question:

In the article, it mentions that most people only think of the term greenhouse effect in the negative context of global warming. In fact, without this natural phenomenon there would be no life on Earth and without greenhouse heating, the oceans would freeze over. So, how can we balance greenhouse heating?

Summary:

It’s possible that global warming is a combination of the Earth’s natural climate rhythm and man’s activities. Whether the greenhouse effect is natural or man-made, both combined could have serious consequences for the planet.
