reading
well..
then I finally picked up my reading habit again.
I've read several books recently.
First, "The Descendants."
Thanks to the day taken off because of the super rain, I started reading the novel.
I have to say the story is quite different from what I thought.
I haven't seen that movie yet, but since it won Oscar, I decided to give it a try.
the title itself seems to suggest, at the first glance, that the main character is going
to inherit a big amount of money or heritage something.
but after the first few pages, I found it's not about money, at all.
Matt King, because his dying wife and the ugly affair he found right after the accident,
had to take care of his own life, his young daughter and a teenager daughter.
He had no clue how to talk to them, how to deal with their weird, unsuitable behavior
and foul language. He soon realized that he never fulfilled his responsibility as a
father.
What impressed me the most is the way he helped himself and his daughters say
goodbye to his wife and let his friends say goodbye---he held a farewell party.
He managed to go door by door to inform his friends, but found it too painful and
troublesome, maybe. Thus, a party it is.
How odd it is to we asian people. But I think the intention is good. While enjoying
the relaxing atmosphere, they talked out their experience with Joanine, Matt's wife;
they hugged each other, they said their goodbyes.
In the process of saying goodbye, I saw the very fragile feeling of human being
and the strong defensive ability people can pick up when they're in deep sorrow.
they meant not to hurt anyone, but themselves. It seems that by licking the wound
solemnly, alone, they somehow feel relieved. However, the fact is that they need
to open their heart sooner or later. They could yell at each other, blame each other
for not being what they're expected to be, but the fight also lead them to face to
themselves. After knowing the ugliest selves, they know the true meaning of life.
They forgive, they reunite, they let go.
I felt touched by this simple story, although I did felt the story a bit odd.
It's the very weird interaction among human being that make ourselves retrospect
and reflect. We happen to find something similar in the most unfamiliar stories of
people and then we learn, we grow, hopefully.
Ok.
And now I started reading "The Blind side." Well, i have to admit that this time
it's kind of painful reading. The football lingo has driven me crazy. I persisted
and kept reading until p. 102. Now, i'm thinking to quit.
From the reading experience, I felt very happy. I felt calm when reading.
i felt that, i guess it's not only about learning english, but the reading itself
gives me energy. I felt that the patience I gained form reading is such a valuable
side-effect that made me feel proud of myself.
Yes. Keep reading. I believe that reading can help us grow, help us learn, and help
us share.
Cheers.
