‘Escape 2 Africa’: colorful but too complicated
多采多姿但太過複雜的「馬達加斯加2」

“ Madagascar : Escape 2 Africa ” takes off as the memorable characters from the first film are finally leaving Madagascar to return to their home, the Central Park Zoo. (The movie might have been more accurately titled “Escape From Madagascar With an Unscheduled Stopover in Central Africa .”)
Departing in a rickety plane refurbished by a team of resourceful penguins, with the Lemur King Julien and his factotum Maurice along for the ride, the group doesn’t get far until the conveyance plummets to the ground.
Well, there is too Much Going On. We found it confusing how much is going on in this movie. Each of the four leads gets their own storyline.
It turns out that the menagerie has landed in the middle of continental Africa , where, as a harrowing prologue explains, Alex was born and cub-napped several years ago. And it’s at this point that “Escape 2 Africa’s” myriad storylines seem to multiply like so many wildebeests, with Alex reuniting with his parents, Marty discovering the comforts and challenges of fitting in with the herd, the hypochondriac Melman becoming a tribal healer and facing his own possibly impending death, and Gloria finding love with a seductive hippo-on-the-make named Moto Moto, voiced by Black Eyed Peas singer Will.I.Am.
The movie rewards knowledge of popular culture, but if you’re not familiar with the references, you may be lost or miss some jokes. Also, simply referring to something in an unexpected context, like a lion doing a West Side Story dance move, doesn’t mean that reference is automatically funny. The film use pop hits and too many allusions as a crutch. (You’ll have that “I Like to Move It” song stuck in your head for days after.) We didn’t feel much of anything for the main characters until the end, because until then, it was just a wall of jokes. When they stop being frenetic and start developing the characters, the movie greatly improves.
Eventually, all the busy plot lines meet up, converging in a way that may not get points for elegance but that accomplishes the job at hand: setting up the sequel, which was reportedly underway when this movie began filming.
Personally I would like this series much more if the King Lemur wasn’t in it(why they have to listen to him, anyway) and where did that crazy old lady come from (Isn’t she the one in Central Station?), although I found the penguin as popcorn bazooka dementedly funny. The only original voices to come over are the lead penguin, Skipper, and Andy Richter as tiny lemur Mort, and I like their voice.
