Learning English Your Way!
By Charles Estus
Believe it or not, not everyone learns in the same way. Many students in Taiwan
believe that they aren’t very smart because they get low scores on exams. Unlike
the education system in Taiwan which focuses on memorizing lots of information,
teachers overseas usually combines several learning styles or ‘intelligences’ into
their lessons for in-and-out-of-class learning. Do you know the different
intelligences? Some people are stronger in verbal or math skills – some have a
strong ability to play sports, and others are better interacting with people.
Do you know which intelligence, and therefore style is the best for you?
There are 8 main ‘intelligences’ that people have. These are:
n Linquistic 語言的:The ability to use language effectively both orally and in writing.
n Logical / Mathematical 邏輯的 / 數字的: The ability to use numbers effectively and reason well.
n Visual / Spatial 視覺的 / 空間的: The ability to recognize form, space, color, line, and shape and to graphically represent visual and spatial ideas.
n Bodily / Kinesthetic 動覺的: The ability to use the body to express ideas and feelings and to solve problems.
n Musical 音樂: The ability to recognize rhythm, pitch, and melody.
n Naturalistic 自然的: The ability to recognize and classify plants, minerals, and animals.
n Interpersonal 人際間的: The ability to understand another person’s feelings, motivations, and intentions and to respond effectively.
n Intrapersonal 個人的: The ability to know about and understand oneself and recognize one’s similarities to and differences from others.
Depending on which intelligences you have, changing the way you study may help you
learn better and use your time more effectively.
My opinion:
I’ve heard one of my professors mentioned these above during class and wondered
which one I have, neither one or some parts in each intelligence? I believe it’s more
important to find out my preferred learning style.
