Josie’s

Learning English with Movies/TV series

Part I

So, if you’re learning English and you like movies, why don't you watch movies in

English? You can have fun and, at the same time, learn a lot of English.

If you ask me why watch movies in English?
If you are a fan of movies like me, you will notice that they are much better in the original. Watching a dubbed (change the actor's voices into Chinese) film will never be as good as watching the original version. Why? Because in the original version, the actor's voices are real. Everything is just like the director imagined. Learning English

by watching movies is a perfect way to learn what words English native speaker really use. When speaking, native speakers use words and phrases that you often won't find

in a book. Spoken language is quite different from "book language".

For example: “Friends” Monica You bet your ass I'm going to fire you."

Give me the freaking keys!', but you won't find the word freaking in a dictionary.

I have became a big fan of Pixar the Oscar-winning computer animation

production company since they made their very first film “Toy Story”. I was

impressed by how they create the storyline, address the technical challenges such
as visual looks for surfaces, color scripts for lighting (like in Finding Nemo,

impressionistic pastel illustrations that emphasize the light in scenes) and use nothing but computer. Also amazing voice talent by famous movie stars then final

touch is added that is its soundtrack. The most hilarious part is “NG” clip, I’ll

say, com’on animated figures could get a “NG”, this is unexpected to all the

audiences.

I’ve collected all Pixar DVD, each one of them has their own theme and I would

use it as a guideline in my class. Ofcos they’re expressing the goodness which

can’t be seen a lot as before.

Following are some interesting dialogs from the scenes.

SYNDROME
You sir, truly are ''Mr. lncredible''! You know, I was
right to idolize you. I always knew you were tough, but tricking the probe by
hiding under the bones of another super? Oh, man! I'm still geeking out about
it! And then you had to just go and ruin the ride.
I mean, Mr. lncredible calling

for help? ''Help me, help me.'' Lame, lame, lame, lame, lame!

All right, who did you contact?!

MIRAGE
We have a confirmed hit. Target was destroyed.

SYNDROME
Ah, you'll get over it. I seem to recall you prefer to
''work alone''. [evil laughter]

BOB (MR. INCREDIBLE)
Release me...now!

SYNDROME
Or what?

BOB (MR. INCREDIBLE)
I'll crush her.

SYNDROME
That sounds a little dark for you. Well, go ahead.

BOB (MR. INCREDIBLE)
It'll be easy. Like breaking a toothpick.

SYNDROME
[laughing] Show me.

SYNDROME
I knew you couldn't do it. Even when you have nothing to lose.

You're weak. And I've outgrown you.

BOB (MR. INCREDIBLE)
You mean you killed off real heroes so that you could
pretend to be one?

SYNDROME
Oh, I'm real. Real enough to defeat you! And I did it
without your precious gifts, your oh-so-special powers. I'll give them heroics.
I'll give them the most spectacular heroics anyone's ever seen! And when I'm
old and I've had my fun, I'll sell my inventions so that everyone can be
superheroes. Everyone can be super. And when everyone's super...no one will be.
