Looking back at the 21-year-old that I was at graduation, is a slightly uncomfortable experience for the 42-year-old that she has become. Half my lifetime ago, I was striking an uneasy balance between the ambition I had for myself, and what those closest to me expected of me. 對於一個已經42歲的婦人來說,回顧21歲畢業典禮的時刻並不是一件讓人舒服的事情。在前半生中我一直努力掙扎,為了在自己的雄心壯志與親人對我的期盼之間取得一個平衡點。
You might never fail on the scale I did, but somefailure in life is inevitable.你可能不會像我當初一樣一敗塗地,但是人生不可能一帆風順。It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default. 生命不可能一點挫敗都沒有,除非你如履薄冰、步步為營,枉費走了這一遭,果真是這樣,你就算是未戰先降了!
Failure gave me an inner security that I had never attained by passing examinations. Failure taught me things about myself that I could have learned no other way.失敗使我的內心產生一種安全感,以前通過考試也沒有的安全感。失敗讓我認清自己,以前我從沒意識到自己是這樣的。
