Famous Movie Quotes

"Can we learn English by watching movies?" you may ask.

Yes, of course you can. It all depends on the way you watch them. Do not think that just because something is fun - entertaining - that it cannot have an educational purpose. Remember that cultures have traditionally passed on their group wisdom in the form of stories - that's what literature is. So when we listen to a story, we are listening to an explanation of what life is about. Whether we hear it as a spoken tale, read it as a novel, or watch it as a film, we are always 'listening to a story'. It is enjoyable - and it is instructive.

Simply watching a film exposes you to language - language in a real life situation, which you cannot have in a book. You can see the expressions on the characters' faces as they speak, hear the inflection of anger or humour in their voices, see the action that produces or is produced by the words. This in itself is of great value. Furthermore, we shall be studying parts of the film in great detail, and there will be lots of exercises to be done, lots of language manipulation for you to practice. You will see the English language being used in all sorts of ways, and you will be required to use it yourself in all sorts of ways, in other words you will have to use the language for communication. Which is what language is for.

Let’s take a look at the following quotes from movies:

"My Mama always said, 'Life was like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're gonna get.”

I’m sure you all know where does it come from, Forrest Gump. The life philosophy that Forrest’s mother often told him which vividly describes what human beings’ life is like. Before you open this box of chocolates, you can never know what kind of chocolates you have got, is it the kind with sweetness, the kind with bitterness or the kind with both? You cannot know until you open the box.

"I could dance with you till the cows come home...On second thought, I'd rather dance with the cows when you came home."

Well, I couldn’t remember name of the movie. But just listen to the line, ouch! It hurts.

First rule of leadership: everything is your fault. – A Bug’s Life →  So so true, I need to remember this.

“You can’t handle the truth!” – A Few Good Men

It’s always a pleasure to watch Jack Nicholson. A Few Good Men or The Bucket List, just look at the following dialogues between Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise.

Col.Jessep: You see Danny, I can deal with the bullets, and the bombs, and the blood. I don't want money, and I don't want medals. What I do want is for you to stand there in that faggoty white uniform and with your Harvard mouth extend me some fucking courtesy. You gotta ask me nicely.

I run my unit how I run my unit. You want to investigate me, roll the dice and take your chances. I eat breakfast 300 yards from 4000 Cubans who are trained to kill me, so don't think for one second that you can come down here, flash your badge, and make me nervous.

Col. Jessep
: You want answers?

Kaffee: I think I'm entitled.

Col. Jessep: *You want answers?*

Kaffee: *I want the truth!*

Col. Jessep: *You can’t handle the truth!*

Col. Jessep: Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Whose gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago , and you curse the marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago 's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.
