血鑽石 Blood Diamond

早上看報紙得知這部電影即將上映，我真的很高興，因為世界上還有好多人都不知道他們所愛的鑽石，竟是衝突的來源

正好手邊有些資料，關於血鑽石的消息，是之前在上會話課時Amanda給了我們一些相關資料，我才知道的，我也立刻意識到這是一個全世界人們都應該要知道的事實

De Beers的“鑽石恆久遠，一顆永流傳”相信大家一定都聽過。這句廣告語的英文版本──“The Diamond is Forever”1953年推出以來，就一直沿用至今，更是被奉為經典，然而，這完完全全是個假象

鑽石是普遍卻難以交易的

鑽石是既沒有價值也不稀少。事實上，鑽石是地球上很普遍的礦產，在歐美地區，已經裁切好的鑽石數量比汽車還多。雖然它們非常的昂貴，可是卻難以像商品一樣被自由交易，因為二手鑽石的價格遠低於原價。天然鑽石的美麗反射光芒也已經可以用人造鑽石取代。如果鑽石沒有那傳統浪漫的形象，它可能一點都不值錢。

人為哄抬而形成的昂貴

鑽石的昂貴高價是南非一家企業 De Beers，成功運用市場行銷而成的結果。De Beers 獨占了世界上 80% 的鑽石供給，在嚴格的產量控管下，De Beers 成功地維持鑽石的人為高價。藉由塑造出鑽石浪漫永恆的形象，大大減少了鑽石持有者賣出鑽石的行為，即使是經濟大蕭條，人們還是會盡量保有鑽石而不賣出，因為它對持有者可能有特殊的意義。

供給大於需求

世界上鑽石的供給量一直都超過它的需求，邏輯上說來，鑽石應該會跌價變得很便宜才對。但是，De Beers 透過持續買進市場上多餘的鑽石來維持它的高價，估計到目前止，De Beers 已經囤積了價值超過百億美金的鑽石了。De Beers 還能支撐多久，持續買進市場上的鑽石，沒人能回答。

剝削廉價勞工

世界上絕大多數的鑽石，都是非洲或俄羅斯貧窮的鑽石礦工所開採出來的，四分之三的鑽石是由印度的極度貧窮的勞工完成切割，其中大部分還是童工，勞資則是每切割一顆石頭四分美金。
美國因為 De Beers 不道德的剝削勞工，而禁止這家公司在美國設立商店販售鑽石，可是諷刺的是，透過其他中間商的販售，美國仍然是 De Beers 最大的鑽石市場。

成功的廣告和行銷

De Beers 在世界鑽石市場的成功，可以說是一個近乎完全獨占的完美範例。De Beers 總是能刺激鑽石的需求，另一方面減少鑽石的供給，即時在奇異 GE 發明人造鑽石後，De Beers 還是能成功維持鑽石的高價完美形象。事實上，De Beers 每年花費超過美金一億六千萬的廣告費用，重複傳遞 "Diamonds are Forever 鑽石恆久遠" 的訊息，持續鑽石浪漫的傳奇。
這家在1859年創立的南非公司 De Beers 用了一個世紀的時間說服美國人接受歐洲用鑽戒當作婚戒的傳統。1950年代，同樣的奇蹟又在日本上演，De Beers 成功的將西方婚戒的文化傳遞到日本和亞洲，日本此後也成為世界上第二大的鑽石消費市場。

而＂Blood Diamond＂這部電影的背景是1990代末期的獅子山共和國（Sierra Leone），當時，為了搶奪鑽石礦的開採權和走私的管道，獅子山爆發內戰，光是1997年到2000年，在戰亂中死亡的就高達7萬5千人。其實，在非洲的主要鑽石礦藏所在國家，如獅子山、安哥拉、剛果民主共和國，戰火綿延，砲彈與血肉齊飛：鑽石的開採提供了打仗所需要的武器，買了武器又來搶奪鑽石開採的權利。如此循環反覆，哪一塊鑽石能不沾上黑錢與非洲人民紅色的血跡？

獅子山內戰的背景既不是意識型態的鬥爭，也不是族群或地域的衝突，其根源完全是因為敵對的國際珠寶商對鑽石礦藏的競奪。鑽石稀有而昂貴的特質更激發商人的貪婪與無情，他們不僅將商場視為戰場，同時也將戰場視為商場，在無數非洲戰士的屍骨上累積他們的財富。

獅子山每年有10億美元的寶石流入國際珠寶市場，而其豐富的鋁礦藏量也足以影響到國際市場的價格。因此，不僅跨國鑽石集團在此展開血腥的競爭，做為前殖民母國的英國也部署軍力支持當權派，以維持礦藏開採的穩定。複雜無比的外來勢力介入獅子山內戰，使得這個祖先被販賣為黑奴的國家，幾乎看不到任何和平的希望。由於連年戰亂，死傷無數，為了補充兵員，許多孩子們小小的年紀就被迫武裝，送上戰場。每年的雨季過後，鑽石在雨水沖刷下裸露出來，用很簡單的器械就可以採拾，這時候，娃娃兵又成為最廉價的勞工。有多少美麗的鑽石就這樣沾染了孩子們的血水與淚水！

事實上，過去十年間因這鑽石戰爭死亡的人已超過370萬人，而且並未結束，不論這部電影究竟能揭露多少真相，但我想至少能傳達出一些相關訊息，其他就靠人們自己挖掘了

u r brave to speak out the truth & kind to let me know how u ever
studied the story on diamonds, thank u...
look forward to see the movie "Blood Diamond"
though i like the shiny sparkling of diamonds very much,
won't pay any penny to those greedy people who never work hard
for it
prefer to care for the actual workers who are so innocent & nice
w/out complaint when others push them badly but earn a little ...
i shall pray for them sincerely wishing some fair treatment in
return to them

thanks for your response
you are right, boycott is the best way to stop the tragedy
even if they stop fighting for diamonds or stop forcing people to
work with unfair pay, we should still NOT buy diamonds, because
of the unbeatable truth: diamonds worth nothing

i agree diamonds worth nothing when just for decoration on the
body, but as we understand its hardness serves best cutting tool
in technology fields, therefore i want to refuse unreasonable
high price that people overvalue for their own sales, and need
every one appreciate what real diamond means to us, ok, forever
like dream for love, for peace, for happiness, and for justice!
can not deny there are more western movies worth deep thinking,
hope we Chinese will also produce some different movies other
than personal affairs when deal with an open international
culture for living people to learn from each other to do our best.
well, i might be too talktive & narrow minded, if i were rich,
would buy a wedding ring w/diamonds on it for my children for
their marriage... because diamonds are colorful under the sun,
like pure heart and kind blessing... now, can remember only the
blood before a diamond is born ... Africa's pride!

oh, you're right, ha, i completely forgot they can be used to cut
metals
and speaking about the meaning of diamond, man! the salers really
did a good marketing, "diamonds are forever" is like branded in
everyone's mind
too talktive & narrow minded? you're kidding, no, happy to talk
to you, it's a good conversation
allow me to give you an advice, i think you could buy crystal
instead, coz...i just bought one for gift, not bad, ha

This movie is really good. I am deeply touched. Maybe it is
just a movie or a story but it reflects the truth to some
extend. I believe most of people are innocent and misled. After
knowing the story, I think I won't purchase diamond afterward.
