Tokio In World Vol. 10 Nagase Tomoya
OMG, this article in July is so funny I have to translate it. The funny things that happened to Nagase Tomoya on his travels – TOKIO IN WORLD
1. The first time to America
Totally fascinated by the manufacturing country of AMEKAJI at 13 years old
The first time I went overseas, it was Hawaii. At 13, the first time travelling, because it was by flight, I was worried if the plane would fall or not. Not having too much work on this trip, I went boating and shopping. I was very shocked to see that the AMEKAJI shoes and T-shirt were made in USA. The Nike and Addidas sneakers which could only be found in Hawaii and Banana Republic, I was totally ecstatic! Even if I was wearing work clothes and a baseball cap, coming from Japan to the US, I was already very excited. Hawaii has the unique dryness and fresh air that Japan doesn’t have and it delights me.
2. Cambodia – the country that moved me
Those children who yearn to live on breaks my heart.
The country that moved me was Cambodia. Four or five years ago, we were shooting overseas and we visited a place where children of incurable disease live and these are energetic kids but since they were born, they had never left here and so are not aware of the outside world at all. We stayed there for 3 days and when we came back, they cried and said they were lonely. To think that someone like me not being by their side and they would feel lonely. The streets also were filled with drifters. When we ate out at night, there were so many children assembling in the streets that it was like a minefield that you couldn’t set your foot in. When I saw these children who strive to live on, their glowing faces, I in fact felt very pained. So, for those youngsters who live in an abundant Japan and simply want to die, I feel they should not be forgiven.
3. A country that is completely opposite to me – Germany
In Germany, there is no one like me.
When I went to Germany, I was also made aware of some refreshing things. I feel that everything is very packed without a sense of space. For instance, time is very tightly controlled. Garbage disposal has very strict rules. Bottles and etc. had to be sorted by color. The music software and camera I use are made in Germany and when I use it, I would say, “Oh, this is made by Germans.” They have fine workmanship and it feels pretty cool. And also they are very personable piece of equipment, which is “totally opposite” to me. In Germany, definitely there wouldn’t be anyone like me. So the moment I entered the German boundary, my bones have a slightly evil tendency and feel that this is not a place for me to live.
4. A bulls eye country – Australia
The chaotic toilet incident
Eight years ago, we went to Australia for filming a drama and something funny happened. At night we were filming at a somewhat big park and in the 2 meters surrounding us , wild kangaroos hopped around. At that time, I needed to use the toilet and so from Mr. AD I borrowed a wireless microphone and then when into the bushes. Then I bumped into kangaroos and I screamed. So after holding it for 5 hours, I ran to the toilet to relieve myself. Because I didn’t have any tissue paper, I could only tear the pages from the drama script. (laugh). The second day, I went to a golf course for shooting and I didn’t know who shouted across the fields. I was so surprised that I spilled my teacup and the drama script was soaking wet. At that moment, the staff said, “A little bit more and it would be finished (the script). What a pity!” (laughs)
5. The remote control country – England
Why does one carry the remote control in an escape?
Because of work, I went to London for the first time and because it was thunderous and pouring rain, filming ended early and we returned to the hotel. While I was running a bath, I went to watch TV. At that moment, there was this, “Wa, Wa…” alarm for a few times. Because I didn’t know why the alarm rang so I continued watching TV. Then the hotel staff knocked went “knock, knock, knock” and said, “It’s thundering, run!” At that time I was shocked. I hopped into my jeans and bare topped and bare footed I ran out. The hotel was already very chaotic. At that state of mine, bare topped, it took me a long time to get to the front and I saw the staff all in perfect suits holding the luggage waiting for me. He asked me, “Did you bring your passport?” I looked my jeans pocket and it was the remote control for the TV. (laughs)
