Conscription
Is the R.O.C. military professional?
No, it is a conscription or draft-based military.
All men must serve for a period of either two or three years.
Those planning to enter college or university must first receive two months of preliminary training, and serve for another year and ten months upon graduation.
Others, depending upon their draw in the draft lottery, serve for two or three years, beginning when they're eighteen.
College or university graduates may take the officers' exam, and those holding Master degrees automatically enter the service as officers.
Most people on Taiwan believe that young men are only really mature when they have completed their military duty, because as soliers, they must endure many hardships, drawing only upon their own strength of character(靠自己堅強的性格).
Do women also have to perform some kind of national service?
Excepting only those native to sensitive areas, no.
Can a conoscript choose where he will serve with his duty?
He can write down his preferences, ut there's no guarantee he'll get his pick.
What if a guy's sick or disabled-- does he still have to go?
Ifhe can prove he is disabled, then he needn't serve.
Is serving in the military dangerous?
There are hazords, of course, but it s generally not a dangerous situation.
Can you postpone your military service until you've finished studying?
Yes, but a young man cannot leave Taiwan even to attend graduate school abroad unless he has first completed his military service.
Why's that? Doesn't that discourage people?
The government fears that if too many young men left and didn't return, the military would be weakened adn the country's resources drained.
But don't people get discouraged?
No, because it has been this way for a long time.
Moreover, youngmen know that they are doing their country a good service.
