Personal Statement Yin-Hsuan Ashley Chen
This summer I was a participant at ENCORE School for Strings in Hudson, Ohio.
I was inspired by the brilliant performances of young violin and cello prodigies.
It was not their effortless and accurate technique that surprised me,
but rather their communication of musical ideas,
intimate expression and various tone colors that left an unforgettable effect on my heart.
Although I have always been focused on a professional music career,
it has only been in the past year that I have begun to really grasp what it is I want to accomplish and how to obtain my goals and communicate my love for music.
As a child in Taiwan I focused on securing a position in the Taipei National University of the Arts.
There I met colleagues with passion and dedication for music and for the first time discovered the joy of chamber music!
I was inspired to come to the United States to further my musical studies after hearing concerts at the University given by young Taiwanese musicians who had received training in the States.
Their vibrant interpretations, solid technique and confident manner had a profound impact on me
I wanted to perform with the same charisma but was not clear how to obtain this.
Inspired by these performers, I eagerly applied to study with Margo Tatgenhorst Drakos at the Manhattan School of Music for my Masters in Cello Performance. I felt quite behind my colleagues. In Taiwan I had always been told that I was talented,
but I did not have clear picture of what I was striving for.
In New York I was given the analytical tools to match my motivation.
It was then that I realized that music that relies only on instinct is not really music at all.
My professor Ms. Drakos, helped me to realize, discover and control different ranges of vibrato,
how to choreograph and distribute the bow, explore the direction of each note and phrase, and push the boundaries of the musical tension.
After several attempts and experiences, I finally knew how to listen to myself, pay attention to every detail and started to make my own music.
I possess the ability to recognize technical problems and constructively correct these issues.
My strong and positive attitude helps me to face and solve these obstacles.
The distinguished professors, facilities and diversified curriculum in your program are the best choice for furthering my development and obtaining my goals.
Generally speaking, my goal is to not only benefit from your program but to be an integral part of the school as well.
Specifically, I have four primary objectives to achieve during D.M.A. studies.
First, I want to further explore the cello repertoire, particularly works written after 1970 with which I am unfamiliar.
Second, I would like to perform all six Bach Unaccompanied Suites during my degree program.
Third, I would like to further explore the intricacies of the bow arm and left hand techniques so that I can articulate fundamental cello issues for students ranging from beginners to advanced high school students preparing for music conservatory auditions. Lastly, I plan to prepare orchestral audition repertoire, as I would like to obtain an orchestral position in the United States upon completion of my D.M.A.
I look forward to building upon my strengths and developing my own playing style and I believe your school will best provide me with that opportunity.
