ASSIGNMENT TAIPEI TOEFL iBT SPEAKING- WEEK 1 (part 3) 20090228 previous paper

Q1 Describe a skill you want to learn.

1. The skill I want to command is to repair large-scale machines, which is of great help in my scientific research. Firstly, if I can repair apparatus in my laboratory all by myself, I won’t depend on others. Asking others for solution usually cost considerable time and money. I even have to please them in order to solve the problem as soon as possible. In addition, if I master the skill of machine-reparation, I’ll be more familiar with the machine and working principle and can offer help to others. That’s why I want to learn the skill of machine-reparation.

2. I would like to learn basic computer skills, since computers are complex machines built upon very simple principles. They perform arithmetical operations millions of times over to transform digital information, moving at lightning speed, into usable human data. A personal computer's job is to help a user create, manipulate, deliver, receive, or delete media content. This is a simple, sterile definition that sounds uninteresting on the surface. Nevertheless, these fundamental functions mimic human ability in some surprising ways. Therefore, the computer is increasingly becoming an engine of the imagination, a platform for the digital life.

3.  (Communication Skills) Communication is an important part of life and is one that is often taken for granted. When you think about it, almost everything you do requires improved communications. To be effective in business, you have to communicate well. When you hire a new employee, good communication skills help you select the right person. When you communicate with your various stakeholders, you need to be clear about your expectations and to be sensitive when dealing with problems. The key is to know how to effectively communicate your vision with passion and conviction.

Q2 Do you agree or disagree? ‘Students should have a yearlong break before heading to college.’

1. I tend to agree that students having a one-year break before entering college. First of all, so many years of study and exams before college really cost energy, after graduating from high school, a long-term break will be beneficial for students both physically and mentally. Students can use the break to enjoy life and decide their future development. In addition, it’s also a good chance for poor students to use the break to earn a certain tuition for their college study. So I support the one-year break before college.

(Agree)

2. The students have a chance to decide if they want to study a certain major, they can intern in a field in which they are interested, and they have a chance to travel.

3. Taking a year to get a closer look at what you want to do? Having the opportunity to spend time at a business can give a young adult valuable experience. Besides observing more about their chosen field and gaining important people skills, students will learn to juggle tasks and manage time.

4. Many people who have taken the gap year may find themselves struggling to get back to their career afterwards.
