University should pay equal attention on Extracurricular activities

Extracurricular activities offer university or college students a chance to sharpen real-world skills such as leadership and teamwork. Recently, more and more businesses highlights applicants' experiences in extracurricular activities because students who have been attending social clubs or school sport teams often show better interpersonal relationship and confidence. Take myself for example, I joined tennis club during my university life. Keeping a habit of exercising has improved my physical strength, in addition to that, I have learned some critical lessons like cooperating with teammates, juggling my time between games and homework, and standing up quickly after losing a game. These precious skills cannot be taught in reference books or classes.  Therefore, college offices should encourage students to spend some time on sport or social activities.

Some people might argue that there is no need for college offices to offer financial support on these activities, just orally support is enough. But this is unfair. University or college is a place where students develop their skills to accommodate the real world--in both professional fields and social skills; therefore, school education should also includes lessons that cannot be taught in classes. Schools without financial support may choose to cut off courses or faculties.  The same situation happens in school clubs without financial support. They will probably ask members to pay more in order to sustain the operation of the clubs, and those who are not able to pay will choose to quit, and then end up with the crisis of dismissing the clubs. This contradicts to the idea that school offices should encourage students to attend extracurricular activities. Actually, in some famous universities, the financial support in student clubs is no less than academic affairs.

However, this does not mean that extracurricular activities should receive EQUAL final support, especially when the budget is limited. Although extracurricular activities are really beneficial to students, the main purpose of university education is still professional and academic knowledge. That is to say, school offices should support extracurricular activities, but base on not to decrease academic budget. After all, for club leaders and members, learning how to optimize the use of limited budget is also crucial.
