[Book]The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown
It has been long since I last picked up a thriller and enjoyed it from cover to cover within just a few days. Have I lost the insentives for reading, or was it just because there wasn't a book that was able to catch my attention? It is difficult to find a meaningful book and one that doesn't not put you to sleep, but quite contrastingly, keeps you awake because of the suspense. That's just what Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code" is.
So what can a novel about the well known artist Da Vinci possible have to make itself stay on the chart of the best-sellers? What is the American symboligist going to do with the French cryptologist to make the readers keep turning the pages? It seemed rather like the regular thriller novel that I simply hesitated to read due to its thickness. I was proved wrong.
Told and untold stories are unveiled little by little. Every page I turn to, I get a surprise. My passion towards literature has led me to involve myself in a slight knowledge on the Bible and Christianity, or just the western world in general. The facts I have learned reappear and help me understand the developement of the novel. The French and Spanish lessons certainly paid off as well. But what was the most fascinating, was that what I have learned in a minor elective course about Goddesses and Cutlutre also came to play a significant role!
I was stunned, and still am fascinated by how my four years of study are all packed together into this 500-page thriller novel. Whether or not the novel reveals the truth may not be that much of my concern as a nonChristian, but I have been told long ago by a male English lecturer that the Bible is full male dominancy. The feministic aspect of the novel does certainly catch my attention.
If you are a student, or simply a lover of literature; if you are a student or a lover of Leonardo Da Vinci, you should not let this book sit on the bookshelves of your local bookstores. Take home a copy, read it, and you won't regret it.
(I don't often persuade people to buy books, certainly if you could get hold of a free copy, but this is a novel worth keeping definitely.)
