The Power of Connecting
By Edgar Syaifalah
Edgar’s essay discusses generosity, compassion, and the power of accepting others for who they are.
Modern society depends on each of its generations to help propel the nation with bright ideas, and with inventions to make life easier and more satisfying. Within each passing generation are life lessons embedded in the minds of each person. For the newest era of children and teenagers, lessons of generosity, social relations, compassion, appreciation, and the understanding that actions have consequences, should be of utmost importance.
The Common Good
One story in the Bible focuses on an elderly woman who has but one, single coin. She goes to a place of worship and deposits her coin into the collection box: an act of generosity from the heart. Her one act brought her a happiness and warmth of feeling that even buying food for herself could not. Such a lesson in generosity should be shared with children of all ages, whether or not they are religious.
Our economy is in ruins due to the greed and corruption of many on Wall Street. Such a crisis can be avoided if the lust for money is vanquished. Generosity, as exemplified by the woman who cared about the common good, is able to bring happiness and joy, and that is better for people to experience.
